Refer to Appendix 4 (p. 66) of the Trauma-Informed Practice Guide that is uploaded. Review the readings on “Skills & Strategies for Asking About Trauma” and “Practice Traps—Asking About Trauma”.
Part 1. Providing Rationale and Normalizing Questions
You are running a support group with your coworkers for spouses who have lost partners due to suicide. Some of recent and others, many years ago. As a group, discuss and share a ‘normalizing question/ statement’ for those who may feel as if “they should have gotten over it by now” or “I can’t believe that I am not functioning, even at work or with my kids…I should be able to just put my head down and be there to support the family!”. Come up with one statement in response to these made by the client.
Follow the guidelines from the TIP guide (p.66)
Part 2. Making Choice Explicit
You are working in a busy ER and are called to the treatment room to perform a physical and mental health assessment of an 18 year old female college student. She reports that she was sexually violated at a dorm party and brought herself to the hospital directly afterwards.
Following the guidelines of the TIP guide (p. 66), how will you respond to ‘make choice explicit’? ( one statement only)
Part 3. Questioning Informally
You are working with a war veteran, suffering from depression and PTSD. During their stay in the acute in-patient psychiatric unit, you have gotten to know this patient superficially over a couple of night shifts. Today is your first day shift to sit and talk with them.
Following the guidelines of the TIP guide (p. 67), how will you respond to build a conversation based on the skills of ‘questioning informally’? ( one statement only)
Part 4. Eliciting Strengths
You are working with the discharge planning team and a patient who has been in the hospital due to crisis for the past month. He lost his wife and young child in a house fire and is eager to start the process of healing and recovery by moving in with his brother and his family “for a while”. This patient is a successful restaurant manager, who has received an outpouring of support from his small home-town community. In the hours before his discharge, he starts to question whether or not he is ready to take this step.
Following the guidelines of the TIP guide (pm. 67-68), how will you respond while ‘eliciting strengths’? ( one statement only).
