Nursing Theory
What is the difference between high-, middle-, and low-range theories? Explain your understanding of a middle-range nursing theory. Identify a research study in which a middle-range theory was applied. Discuss the study results and implications for practice.
Any reference to nursing practice must be able the emergency room, thank you

The Difference between High-, Middle-, and Low-Range Theories
High-range theories are closest to grand theories and involve broad and abstract concepts such as culture, and transcendence, while middle-range consists of theoretically defined but fairly specific constructs such as chronic sorrow and uncertainty of illness. Low range theories, on the other hand, comprise more specific and defined concepts such as acute pain management.
Understanding of a Middle-Range Nursing Theory
A middle-range nursing theory addresses a specific phenomenon and tends to reflect practice. It focuses on a specific field and not a broad scope of nursing as grand theories. A middle-range theory provides a middle reality view and equips nurses with concrete ideas, although the ideas tend to be limited. A middle-range nursing theory is less abstract, and concepts of such a theory are easily operationalized. I also understand that a middle-range theory bridges the gap between grand theories and nursing practice.
A Research Study in Which a Middle-Range Theory Was Applied, Study Results and Implications for Practice
The research study identified sought to examine the impact that a coping violence program has on resiliency, burnout, ability to cope with violence, and competencies of emergency room nurses. The study was based on the middle-range theory of resilience by Polk. The concept of resiliency is viewed as the ability to convert disaster into a growth experience. According to Polk’s middle-range theory, the more diverse the four resiliency patterns, the greater the resiliency of a person. The research was a quasi-experimental study where 36 emergency room nurses participated. The study results indicated that a violence coping program reduces burnout and improves resilience, nursing competencies, and active coping behavior of emergency room nurses. Implications for practice are on health care facilities and the administrative team as they should introduce and implement the violence coping programs in their facilities and units. Based on the study’s conclusion, the intervention would be effective in achieving an improvement in the quality of care provided by nurses in the emergency room (Lee & Sung, 2017).
