Choose two nursing theories discussed this week in your readings. Compare them in terms of concepts, assumptions, implications, and application.
The two nursing theories I chose to discuss are Faye G. Abdellah: Patient-Centered Approaches to Nursing and Virginia Henderson: The Principles and Practice of Nursing. After reading through the different theories, I found these two to be the most interesting.
The assumption of Faye relates to change and anticipated changes that affect nursing; the need to appreciate the interconnectedness of social enterprises and social problems; the impact of problems such as poverty, racism, pollution, education, and so forth on health and health care delivery; changing nursing education; continuing education for professional nurses; and development of nursing leaders from underserved group (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Where Virginia’s assumption states that nurses care for patients until patients can care for themselves once again. Faye includes a larger spectrum of entities when it comes to nursing, whereas Virginia’s was simple and straightforward.
The concepts of Virgina relate to concepts of the theory relate to the metaparadigm. Henderson believed that “the unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Whereas Faye’s concepts include 10 steps to identify the client’s problems and 10 nursing skills to be used in developing a treatment. I like Virginia’s theory because although it’s very simple, It’s also very practical. A person should be cared sick or well. Faye’s theory of nursing seems a little too complicated to me.
One implication in regard to Faye’s theory is that her work is a conceptual model and is not directly testable because there are few stated directional relationship (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Meaning, patient and personal satisfaction with nursing care could not be testable. One implication to Virginia’s theory was that she supported nursing research but believed that it should be clinical research (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Virginia worked hard to change research on nursing because she wanted to focus it more on the practice and outcomes instead of the educational process.
As I stated above, Faye’s work has had an international application on nursing research by strengthening the focus on nursing practice. Faye’s work was applied more towards nursing education. She was more focused on making nursing a profession, rather than an occupation. Overall, it was interesting to learn about these two individuals and their viewpoints towards nursing.

This week the reading focused on Grand Nursing Theories. I’d like to look at Nightingale & Newman for my comparison. Being that Nightingale is such an early theorist, I find it interesting to compare her works to more modern day individuals to exemplify what has changed and what has endured.
CONCEPTS
In terms of concepts, Nightingale was a firm believer in the importance of the idea “that a healthy environment was essential for healing” (McEwen & Wills, 2017, p. 134). In addition, Nightingale stood behind the concept that nursing “was an independent practice in its own right” (McEwen & Wills, 2017, p.134). Newman, on the other hand, largely focused on the concept of recognizing stressors and the use of nursing interventions to combat these problems, with additional focus on prevention. Similarly to Nightingale’s thought that nursing held its own, Newman’s model supported a nursing process that involved diagnosis, goals, and outcomes.
ASSUMPTIONS
Newman distinctly lists 10 assumptions of her systems model, including that “the client as a system is in dynamic, constant energy exchange with the environment” (McEwen & Wills, 2017, p. 152). Similarly, Nightingale had a large focus on the state of the environment for an individual. Nightingale also assumed that human interaction/social correspondence was an important aspect of healing.
IMPLICATIONS
Nightingale’s views of nursing imply that the nurse is able to make changes to the environmental conditions of the patient and in turn help them towards health. Newman’s model implies that the nurse, with adequate assessment, is able to work with the patient to set goals and work towards health when incorporating appropriate nursing interventions.
APPLICATION
Being that Nightingale’s works were some of the first and are still talked about to this day, I would say that they have wide and lasting application in the discipline. Newman’s model has also proved to have wide application and has been applicable to practice and education.

Hello, thank you for giving me this remarkable opportunity to contribute to your post. Your views concerning the discussion are well structured and conservative, thus easily understandable. I will only add a few points to your post. After reviewing your work on the two theories you chose, I could agree more and accept that Faye G. and Virginia Henderson’s models are essential in understanding the nursing profession and its practice in patients.

Health practitioners such as nurses and clinicians have highly used nursing theories and models in enticing their care practices into a more advanced clinical manner (Younas & Quennell, 2019). For instance, Henderson’s model focuses on nursing problems, thus ensuring the patients are well taken care of irrespective of their healing progress. Eventually, they can manage to continue emulating the same care on their own based on their nursing experiences (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Therefore, health organizations should enrol those registered, licensed, and well-educated nurses at the university level in both sciences and arts.

Response 2

Hello, I appreciate you considering my interest in this discussion. Thank you for taking the time to contribute to the discussion. I agree with your views and will only add a few remarks to your contributions. I would like to emphasize so much on Nightingale’s model. Her concepts and assumptions are realistic in ensuring the wellbeing of individuals. Cleanliness, fresh air and proper sanitation are essential in managing quality care and improving wellbeing McEwen & Wills, 2019). Therefore, nursing is indeed a profession that must be highly respected and those involved to be applauded as it requires too much attention and a caring attitude, thus a calling.

Grand theories are highly centred on human needs thus revolve around real-life situations in enhancing quality nursing practices. All the human needs models have contributed to the nursing profession’s development, right from patient care, diagnoses, and treatments. Some of the theories developed by theorists like Abdellah’s have contributed to advanced nursing education among nursing students, thus enabling health organizations to enhance patient satisfaction through effective care services.
